Guys, this orange creature is not thinking about you, but about securing a Trump dynasty

 It’s this: how can a vast modern country choose for its leader a person who has no interest in their well-being and history, but only in his own power and cementing that for his family?

 And the answer I give is – well, the people in that country cannot know what is going on. They can’t follow the news, or understand what their leader has done to the reputation of their nation. They must have low moral standards, because surely a person who announces without any compunction that unless they win, it must have been fraud is …. Rodrigo Duterte? The guy in Belarus? Vladimir Putin?

 

People might wonder why I care so much, but I’m not alone. Setting aside the millions of Americans (Joe is going to win the popular vote again) who are horrified by Trump, all over the world the disgust at his behaviour is widespread. And he is the leader of the United States, if not any more the City on the Hill, still a template, an example, a glorious place of achievement, variety and its own constructed grandeur.

 

Here’s why I care. It’s because a person such as Trump (and luckily there are few) sets such a bad example. Laugh if you will. Trump has shown the world, politicians, businesspeople, children, that his path is the road to success. Tell lies. Call sober, well-researched reports about you “Fake news!” Malign people of good intent in all walks of life. Mock the disabled. Dishonour your marriage vows.

 

You might say I’m getting picky with the last one, and a roll-call of US presidents would find quite a few transgressors in this way. But Trump’s infidelity and open-mouthed assessment of women purely on their looks is reprehensible. (What, incidentally, has he been doing for sex the past four years? Do they smuggle prostitutes into the White House? It seems odd if he has given up, and I’d be very surprised if Melania accommodates the fat old man.)

 

The shock and awe is not reserved solely for those who could vote for this reprobate, a person who has no compunction in unleashing serious violence in the service of his advancement. It’s also directed at the Democratic Party, who endorsed such a lacklustre candidate and compounded the problem by lack of awareness of the extent to which a black female deputy could appeal to the masses.

 

With Joe so sleepy and old looking, although he’s only a few years senior to Trump, you’d have to consider that the real candidate was Kamala Harris. And she’s smart and experienced, but not going to cut it with the racists and sexists, of whom there are a few in Trump-loving areas.


My fear and anxiety divides mostly into two categories: that Trump will feel no constraint on his bad behaviour this time, and if called out on it, will just cry “Fake news” insouciantly; and that he will busy himself in the latter part of the four years with installing his pneumatic daughter and vacant sons as his successors. Think that unlikely? What did you think when Trump announced he was running for president four years ago?

 

Anyway, as I write there’s still a chance that Joe Biden will hit 270 votes in the wretched Electoral College. I better get down on my knees and start praying.

Pity the pizza guy who is knocked off his bike and beaten

  Dublin’s north inner city is not a place you want to be assigned if you are a Deliveroo driver. These (mostly) young men of non-Irish backgrounds are finding it’s a war zone, where they are likely to be attacked, robbed, assaulted as they try, of all innocuous things, to deliver some noodles or a pizza.   The problem has been festering for some time, and appeared on the national news again this weekend. The chief elements are boredom and racism. Youths with nothing to do,  suffering from a large dose of Covid lockdown frustration, appear to have found the cyclists with the grey and green Deliveroo boxes on their backs a tempting target. Which is worse: incompetence or lust?

I wouldn’t for a minute sink to prurient discussion of the troubles that have befallen Britain’s Minister for Health (make that ex-minister). But Matt Hancock’s resignation after images of him passionately embracing his “special adviser” do bring up the question of what counts as sackable behaviour, in any work context.   The hapless Hancock did not have a stellar reputation during his two years in the job. Mind you, being health minister at any time is a difficult post (former Irish health minister Brian Cowen once described his department as “Angola”, and he didn’t mean everyone spoke Portuguese). Being health minister during the Covid-19 pandemic, facing unprecedented challenges, would have tested the greatest mettle.
